Winter weather can wreak havoc on your skin. The bracing winds and freezing temperatures can dry out your skin’s delicate moisture barrier, causing redness and irritation. Luckily, there are steps you can take to minimize winter’s effects on your skin. Try these tips from Spa Solai to keep your skin glowing and healthy during the cold winter months.

Switch Up Your Routine

The skin routine you’ve so carefully cultivated for the warmer months may need some readjusting come winter. While your skin may make do with a light gel moisturizer in the summer, it’s a good idea to invest in a heavier cream when the winter chill sets in. You may also want to swap your current cleanser for a non-comedogenic version that won’t irritate dry skin. For improved hydration, you can also choose to add a serum or face mask containing hyaluronic acid to your routine. If you’re unsure of the best products for your skin type, one of our skincare professionals would be more than happy to provide a recommendation.

Avoid Astringents

Unless your skin is especially oily, it’s best to avoid excessive use of astringents like salicylic acid, toners, and exfoliants during the winter. These products may clear your acne in July, but the dry winter air will make your skin more sensitive. If you must use these items, do so sparingly and make sure to follow their application with a rich moisturizer.

Use Sunscreen

It may seem illogical, but you still need to apply sunscreen during the winter. Research shows that snow can reflect the sun’s UV rays, causing skin damage normally associated with a long day at the beach. Whether you’re hitting the slopes or building a snowman in your backyard, be sure to use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 on any exposed areas. Don’t forget your lips, either. Try a lip balm or salve that contains SPF for increased protection.

Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is one of the best ways to avoid dry skin in the winter. On top of your moisturizing skincare routine, try to drink at least 8 glasses of water per day. You may also consider taking an omega-3 or omega-6 supplement that contains fatty acids. These compounds contain lipids that can assist your dry, itchy skin from the inside out.
